AIRS is an innovative curtain wall system that lowers the energy loads of our built environment through a smart natural ventilation. Based on a dynamic system created with proprietary technologies and designed to be governed by artificial intelligence, AIRS reduces a building’s reliance on mechanical ventilation through a smart management of natural ventilation and prevents the spread of pathologies in indoor environments through more efficient air changes.

The ‘Curtain Wall’ was born in the middle of the last century to enclose indoor environments no longer constrained by perimetral load-bearing walls. Over time, due to the development of mechanical ventilation systems and the low cost of energy, curtain walls have ended up becoming hermetic envelopes that neatly and permanently separate indoors from outdoors. Modern buildings have thus become energy-hungry machines with poor internal environmental quality.

However, in recent decades, a series of events such as the energy crisis, an increasing demand by users for greater control of indoor environmental comfort, climate change and the COVID pandemic have brought these issues back to the fore.

AIRS is a response to the shortfalls of modern facades through the adoption of an innovative ventilation system fully integrated in the curtain wall frame that exploits ancestral and modern techniques. The adoption of the AIRS façade system will offer an improvement in the wellbeing of the users, thanks to the effective reduction of carbon dioxide and pathogenic elements normally present in the indoor air, and in significant energy savings, thanks to the reduced use of mechanical ventilation throughout the year.

AIRS is also a form of adaptation to climate change: increasingly milder seasons offer the opportunity to implement a truly passive ventilation of our buildings for longer periods throughout the year, thus contributing to the progressive decarbonization of the built environment.

Commercialization is scheduled for February 2026.

AIRS was conceived by SKNWKS / Skinworks and is developed together with CMP, Eletica and Università Politecnica delle Marche within the NEXT Generation EU program.

The current project was selected under the Research and Innovation Program “Innovation, digitalization and sustainability for the diffused economy in Central Italy” with code ECS000041.
